Let’s dig into some tech talk today and discern the difference between DevOps and Developers in plain english (any hint of jargon will be explained).

1 ) What is a Developer?

A developer is someone who develops applications. For example: Angry Birds, Spotify, Pinterest App, Instagram, etc.

A developer is the individual who creates an applications appearance and operation. When you press buttons within the app the developer is the one who made them appear and act whenever you use the application.

Skills of the Developer

  • Programming Language Proficiency (Java Script or Python or Swift or HTML or CSS or all of the above (basically the more you know the better.

    • This aspect of the design process has to do with how the user interacts with the application.
    • This is a very important trait to being a great developer.
  • Communication Skills
    • Being able to communicate between department makes the developer a highly valuable aspect of any team.

2 ) What is a DevOps Engineer?

A DevOps Engineer has the ability to create applications, deploy applications, and manage applications that are in the market.

What does it mean to “deploy applications”. With the evolution of cloud computing (ability to store information and data on large cloud based storage platforms) apps can be sent to users directly.       • (Knowing one Very well with a good understanding of the others)
    • SQL Coding (structured Query Language) is a domain-specific language used in programming and designed for managing data held in a relational database management system (cloud for instance)
  • In a Nut Shell a DevOps engineer is a jack of all trades.

They can do just about everything. Now I will say the single biggest risk you take in pursuing a career as a DevOps Engineer is losing your niche, you know, that one thing you are exceptionally good at. When you transition into a DevOps position you are given numerous hats to fill. This is a great value to employers, but it can be a grave diservice to the overall quality of the project.
